Our Classes

Here is a list of classes that we are currently offering. P & M K-9 Dog Trainers use positive motivation while training and is their primary training tool. We will evaluate you and your dog first; just to get an idea on what you both know before we can place you in the correct class. We want you to be a happy dog owner and your dog to feel like it is truly loved. “A loved dog is a happy dog and he or she will want to make you happy”.

For each class we recommend you bring the following items:

  • A 4' - 6' nylon or leather leash (leather is more durable and forgiving on your hands)
  • A Training Collar (i.e. - a choke, or pinch collar, etc.)
  • A Regular Nylon or Leather Flat Collar
  • Your dog's favorite treats - DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG BEFORE CLASS (we want them hungry for treats) (We don't recommend biscuits, they take too long for the dog to eat. Bring something your dog can eat and swallow quickly like pieces of hot dog, cheese, or pepperoni)
  • A pouch to carry treats in.
  • Your dog's favorite toy (We really like tugs and interactive toys)
  • Poop Bags (Please pick up after your dog)
  • A water bowl (we do have a water bowl out all the time, but, if you would like your dog to only drink out of his/her own bowl due to their age or other reason, please bring one)
  • Proof of current vaccinations from your vet (including kennel cough). We do not need a copy, we just need to see that your dog is current on shots and is healthy
  • Adoption Documentation from Rescue or Shelter (if your dog has been adopted from a rescue or shelter please provide the paperwork for discount)
  • Water for yourself.
  • A chair to sit in. A mat or a bed for the dog to rest on.
  • Don't forget to bring your checkbook or cash to pay for the class!

Basic Obedience Training

The most important thing you can do after you get your cute puppy home is to start his or her schooling. Just as you would teach your kids the right way to do things, you also need to teach your puppy.

Your puppy has no clue on what you say to it, nor can it talk to you. We teach you how to teach your new or old puppy what it can and can not do. We teach you what to look for in their body language and their expressions in their movements. This 3 year old German shepherd is thinking one thing and one thing only, when are you going to throw my BALL. She has such a high toy drive that, that is normally what is on her mind.

Here are some of the things that we help you teach your dog in The BASIC Class.

. Sit (sit the dog on your command)
. Lay Down (down the dog on your command)
. Stay (the dog should not move)
. Recall (to come to you from across a yard)
. Heeling (walking with you at your side, not in front of you pulling at the leash)
. Distraction Training (not to run after a toy that is not theirs)

Every thing above and more.....

To pass the Basic Level Certification, your dog must be able to perform the following exercises:

  • Sit, down, & sit from a down at your side (in heel position.)
  • Sit, down, & sit from a down in front of you at the end of the leash in place (without moving forward towards the handler.)
  • Complete a one minute sit stay at your side (loose leash.)
  • Complete a three minute down stay at your side (loose leash.)
  • Heel at your side (will include two sharp left, right, and about turns) and your dog must automatically sit when you stop walking.
  • Formal recall from the end of the leash with a auto sit in front of you or return into heel position with a auto sit.

Intermediate Obedience Training

After you have gone through the Basic Obedience Class and your dog is acting like it knows what you are saying, please think again. The dog is still nothing more then a dog, and you still cannot hold a conversation with it. A dog learns from your movements and reacts to that movement or a group of movements.

In the Intermediate Class we help you refine the things that you have already learned in the Basic Class, and than have the dog farther away from you. We start using hand signals and taking away some of the voice commands. We throw in more things to think about, and work out problems that may have come up at home.

I know that most people just want a dog to listen to them when they say something, and not act like a teenager in front of a TV playing a video game. The whole truth of the matter is, at 1 to 2 years of age, that is what they are. They are hairy, four legged, always hungry teenagers in a dogs body. They will try your nerves, and figure ways around things to get what they want. Obedience Training will for the most part slow that down, just as taking away a video game would do to a teenager. You only need 15 minutes a day to keep on top of the bad behavior and to bring out that “GOOD DOG” hiding inside each and every dog.

To pass the Intermediate Level Certification, your dog must be able to perform the following exercises:

  • Sit, down, & sit from a down at your side (in heel position) with only a hand signal.
  • Sit, down, & sit from a down in front of you at the end of the leash in place (without moving forward towards you) using only a hand signal.
  • Sit & down in-motion (sit and down while the handler is walking.)
  • Stand from a sit and down at your side (in heel position).
  • Stand from a sit and down in front of you at the end of the leash in place (without moving forward towards you.)
  • Formal recall from 25 yards with a auto sit in front of you and then must return into heel position with a auto sit.
  • Must refuse food/treats offered by a trainer while sitting in heel position next to you, and while on a down next to you (the food will be tossed on the floor right in front of your dog.)
  • Heeling (figure eight around two obstacles) and your dog must sit automatically when you stop walking.
  • Complete a one minute stand stay (handler out of site)
  • Complete a three minute sit stay (handler out of site)
  • Complete a ten minute down stay (handler out of site)

Advanced Obedience Training

When you have mastered your dog’s learning ability then you can start the Advanced Class. In the Advanced class you will learn how to down your dog next to you as you have lunch with your friend and not have to think about having a table surfing dog. Once the dogs know what you should expect out of them, then and only then will you be able to enjoy the hard work and time that you put into having a well behaved dog.

In the Advanced Class you will be able to do things without the need of a leash. The dog should be doing what you want it to without having to tell it more than twice. As you walk around town with your “GOOD DOG”, people will be impressed on how well mannered he or she is. Your friends and family will be thrilled when they leave your house without paw prints adding to the design of their nice clothing. It would be nice not having to worry if your dog is going to jump onto someone and push then to the ground just to say “Hi”. We will help you teach your dog how to become a good citizen so you can say, “Thank you” to everyone that notices and comments “Wow! What a good dog you have there”.
